30 May 2007

Last weekend five athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC travelled to the new track in Greystones to compete in Leinster and Irish championship events. On Saturday Maria Duffy claimed a national silver medal with a fine performance of 1622 points in the Over 40 Women's Pentathlon at the Irish Masters' Championships. This event marked Maria's return to multi-events competition after a 10 year break. She was accompanied to the County Wicklow venue by two athletes who were making their multi-events debuts. Although not making the podium this time, they both performed creditably, with Caoimhe McMahon finishing just ahead of Aisling Gernon in the Under 14 Girls' pentathlon at the Leinster Championships. Two of the club's fine crop of javelin throwers struck gold in Greystones on Sunday. Peter McDonald threw 49.05m to claim the Leinster Under 23 title. His younger cousin Paul McDonald won the Leinster Under 20 title with a 39 metre throw.

Next Saturday four athletes from St Peter's are due to compete in the Irish Schools' Championships in Tullamore. Laura O'Neill (St Louis, Dundalk) goes into this prestigious competition as both North Leinster and Leinster champion in the Junior Girls' Javelin. Her St Louis teammate Hilary Kerr won silver in the Intermediate Girls' long Jump at the Leinster Schools'. Two Coláiste Rís athletes from the club also qualified for the Irish Schools' as Leinster silver medallists – Olivia McDonald in the Senior Girls' Javelin and Kevin McManus in the Intermediate Boys' High Jump. Olivia is currently recovering from injury, so hopefully she will be ready to challenge for glory by the weekend. All at the club wish the athletes well in both the Irish Schools' and the Louth county finals of the Community Games this weekend.

Meanwhile regular club training sessions continue each Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6.30 p.m. These are held in the community field behind St Joseph's GAA field in Dromiskin. Younger athletes (8 to 12 years old) finish at 7.30 p.m. while older athletes train until 8.00 p.m. Any prospective new members will be made very welcome at this friendly but progressive athletics club. The members of St Peter's come not only from the Dromiskin and Darver areas, but also from other nearby areas such as Knockbridge and Louth, and even from Dundalk town and further afield.

23 May 2007

Last week brought yet more medals and strong performances for the athletes of Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC. Four athletes finished in the medals (one gold and three silver) at the Leinster Schools' Championships in Santry, Dublin on Tuesday 15th May and Thursday 17th May. On Friday night it was the turn of the younger athletes to shine as three of them picked up medals in tough conditions at the Blackrock AC Beach Races. Finally on Sunday last five teams from the club competed in the Leinster Inter-Club Relays in Navan.

At the Leinster Schools' our star performer was Laura O'Neill (St Louis). Despite throwing a little short of her best, her distance of 27.02m in the Junior Girls' Javelin was over 3 metres ahead of her nearest challenger, and she is a most worthy provincial champion. She also competed in the Shot Putt but finished outside the top six in her secondary event. Laura's St Louis teammate Hilary Kerr won silver in the Intermediate Girls' Long Jump with a leap of 4.90m and finished 6th in the 100m with a time of 13.12. Silver medals also went to Coláiste Rís teammates Olivia McDonald and Kevin McManus. Olivia threw 33.80m in the Senior Girls' Javelin and Kevin scaled 1.70m in the Intermediate Boys' High Jump. Although still somewhat below his best, it was good to see Kevin jumping higher than he had done in recent weeks. He also went in the Triple Jump, but performed below his best in what is a new event for him. Paul McDonald (Scoil Uí Mhuirí) threw 37.16m for 5th place in the Senior Boys' Javelin. Ian McDonald (Coláiste Rís) threw a personal best 29.75m in the Junior Boys' Javelin, while Olive McKenna (St Louis) competed in both the Shot Putt and Javelin at Minor Girls' level.

Laura, Hilary, Olivia and Kevin now advance to compete in the finals of the Irish Schools' Championships in Tullamore on Saturday 2 June. All at the club and in their schools will be hoping that they can achieve further successes in what will be an extremely challenging competition. But we are quietly confident, especially as these are the same four athletes who set county records at the Louth Championships at the beginning of May.

Conditions for the Blackrock Beach Races were difficult with a very heavy shower just before the start of the event, and a strong, cold wind persisting throughout the evening. Nevertheless our younger athletes rose to the challenge amid keen competition from throughout the county. The top six finishers in each race were awarded medals. In the Boys' Under 12 900m race, Liam Fussey, who was probably the youngest boy in the race, ran very impressively to finish in 4th place. His teammate Joseph Mullen was not far back in 7th place. We had a big contingent in the Boys' Under 10 600m race. Cian Duffy was well to the fore in the large field throughout the race and finished in 6th place for a very well-deserved medal. Declan Gernon also battled bravely and was just behind him in 7th place, while Oisín McGuinness, Michael Mullen and Martin McGrane also ran well in this race. Gabriel Bell has been impressing in the sprints in recent weeks and possibly found the 300m distance in the Boys' Under 8 race a little far for his liking. Nevertheless he showed great fighting spirit to finish in 6th place. All the finishers were deservedly rewarded with a carton of orange juice and a bar of chocolate at the end of their race to help restore their energy levels.

In the Leinster Inter-Club Relays in Navan St Peter's was represented in the Boys' Under 9, Under 10 and Under 11 and in the Girls' Under 13 and Under 14 4x100m events. All the teams performed to the best of their ability, but the opposition was stiff and the club did not manage to add to its medal haul from earlier in the week.

16 May 2007

Last weekend was a quiet one on the competitive front for the athletes of Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC. But this week sees seven of our athletes back in action in their most challenging assignment of the outdoor track and field season to date, as they travel to Santry in Dublin to compete in the finals of the Leinster Schools' Championships. Paul McDonald (Scoil Uí Mhuirí) and Oliva McDonald (Coláiste Rís) will be in action in the Senior (Under 19) Javelin events. At Intermediate (Under 17) level two of the club's athletes will be attempting doubles. Kevin McManus (Coláiste Rís) goes in both the High and Triple Jumps, while Hilary Kerr (Dún Lughaidh) tackles the 100m and Long Jump. In the Junior (Under 15) category Laura O'Neill (Dún Lughaidh) will be aiming for a throwing double in the Shot Putt and Javelin. Ian McDonald (Coláiste Rís) will also be in action in this category, where he will be aiming to continue his recent good form and break the 30 metres barrier in the Javelin. The youngest club member travelling to Santry is Olive McKenna (Dún Lughaidh) who competes in the Minor (Under 14) Shot Putt and Javelin. The leading athletes from these championships will qualify for the finals of the Irish Schools' Championships, which will be held in Tullamore on Saturday 2 June.

Meanwhile regular club training sessions continue each Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6.30 p.m. These are held in the athletics field behind St Joseph's GAA field in Dromiskin. Younger athletes (up to 12 years old) finish at 7.30 p.m. while older athletes train until 8.00 p.m. Any prospective new members will be made very welcome at this friendly but progressive athletics club. The members of St Peter's come not only from the Dromiskin and Darver areas, but also from other nearby areas such as Knockbridge and Louth, and even from Dundalk town and further afield.

9 May 2007

Over the past week the athletes of Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC were in action in the first championship competitions of the 2007 track and field season. They enjoyed some great successes in both the Louth County Championships and the North Leinster Schools' Championships. What was perhaps even more impressive was the great spirit shown by all the club's athletes who competed in both these championships, regardless of their finishing positions. The Louth Championships got underway on Friday 4 May, with the High Jump events being hosted by St Peter's AC in Dromiskin. The remaining events were held over the following two days at the splendidly appointed new track in Bush - the brand new home of athletics in Co Louth. Earlier last week the North Leinster Schools' Championships were held at Santry in Dublin - the long established traditional home of Irish athletics.

Five county records were set by four St Peter's athletes in the Louth Championships. Olivia McDonald set new U18 marks in winning the Javelin (34.67m) and Long Jump (4.90m). In addition Olivia won the 100m and Shot Putt (7.80m). Hilary Kerr set a new U17 Long Jump record with an excellent 5.02m and also triumphed in the 100m and 200m. Laura O'Neill also rewrote the record books in winning the U16 Javelin with 29.39m. Not to be outdone by the fairer sex, Kevin McManus set a new U17 High Jump record of 1.65m in Dromiskin on Friday night, and followed up by winning the 100m, 200m and 100m Hurdles in Bush.

The following St Peter's athletes were also crowned county champions: Paul McDonald (U18 Shot Putt 10.34m and Javelin 41.20m), Eoin Gernon (U17 Long Jump 4.99m), Ian McDonald (U16 Long Jump 4.68m and Javelin 29.50m), Declan Gernon (U10 Long Jump 3.22m), Gabriel Bell (U8 60m), Daniel Mullen (U8 Long Jump 2.45m), Ailbhe McGuinness (U15 1500m), Brianán Conway (U15 Javelin 24.02m ), Caoimhe McMahon (U14 80m Hurdles and Long Jump 4.19m), Aisling Gernon (U14 High Jump 1.05m), Niamh Fussey (U13 High Jump 1.10m) and Nikayla Hamill (U10 Ball Throw).

In addition to a hugely impressive total of 27 gold medals the club won 14 silver and 12 bronze medals, bringing their total haul well over the half-century mark. These athletes also had their performances rewarded with a trip to the podium: Eoin Gernon (U17 100m 2nd and High Jump 2nd 1.45m), Ian McDonald (U16 100m 2nd and Shot Putt 2nd 8.43m), Liam Conroy (U15 Shot Putt 3rd 6.27m), Joseph Mullen (U12 Shot Putt 3rd 5.94m ), Liam Fussey (U11 Long Jump 3rd and Ball Throw 3rd), Gabriel Bell (U8 200m 2nd), Ann McCartney (U18 100m 2nd), Sorcha Conway (U18 Javelin 2nd 26.92m), Ailbhe McGuinness (U15 800m 3rd and 80m Hurdles 3rd), Caoimhe Hoey (U15 250m Hurdles 3rd and Long Jump 3rd 3.70m), Brianán Conway (U15 Shot Putt 2nd), Niamh Mernagh (U13 High Jump 2nd 1.00m), Lisa McDonald (U13 Shot Putt 2nd), Niamh Fussey (U13 Ball Throw 2nd), Emma Dennis (U13 Javelin 3rd 6.15m), Nikayla Hamill (U10 200m 2nd) and Róisín McManus (U10 Ball Throw 2nd).

In addition to the individual successes, the club also won medals in the 4x100m relays. Niamh Fussey, Niamh Mernagh, Ellen McGuinness and Lisa McDonald teamed up to take silver in the U13 event. Two other girls' teams won bronze medals: the U15 team (Caoimhe McMahon, Ailbhe McGuinness, Brianán Conway, Olive McKenna) and the U14 team (Caoimhe McMahon, Lisa McDonald, Aisling Gernon, Aisling Byrne). The boys' U11 team (Liam Fussey, Cian Duffy, Declan Gernon, Pauraic McGinn) also struck bronze.

The following athletes also competed in Bush and represented St Peter's with pride and dignity: Ruairí Conroy, Éamon McManus, Aaron Byrne, Ciarán Conway, Craig Hamill, Martin McGrane, Michael Mullen, Caolan Conroy, Oisín McGuinness, Amy Samson, Daire Hoey, Elizabeth Bell, Máire Cáit Byrne, Orlaith McMahon and Claire McCartney.

At the North Leinster Championships St Peter's athletes, representing their secondary schools, won 5 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze medals. Laura O'Neill (Dún Lughaidh) won gold in both the Junior Shot Putt and Javelin. Hilary Kerr (Dún Lughaidh) leapt 5.08m to win the Intermediate Long Jump and was also 2nd in the 100m. Cousins Paul McDonald (Scoil Uí Mhuirí) and Oliva McDonald (Coláiste Rís) had an impressive double victory in the Senior Javelin events with Olivia throwing 34.08m. Her younger brother Ian McDonald (Coláiste Rís) threw 26.60m to take a bronze in the Junior Javelin and also competed in the Long Jump. Kevin McManus (Coláiste Rís) took home 2 silver medals in the Intermediate jumps, adding yet another High Jump medal to his collection with a leap of 1.65m and impressing on his Triple Jump debut with an 11.42m performance. Olive McKenna (Dún Lughaidh) also took home two silver medals in the Minor throwing events, with performances of 7.43m in the Shot Putt and 16.50m in the Javelin. Eoin Gernon also competed in Santry where he attempted the somewhat unusual combination of Steeplechase and High Jump, but unfortunately finished outside the medals. All the medal winners now advance to compete in the finals of the Leinster Schools Championships, which will be held later this month.

Apart from all this action on the track the club's fund-raising activities continue off the track. The most recent was the quiz in Dromiskin which was organised by Patrick Carolan and his colleagues, to whom all at the club are very grateful for their support.

2 May 2007

Last Sunday (29th April) almost 30 athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC travelled to Co Meath to compete in the annual Cushinstown AC Open Sports. This was the opening meet of the outdoor track and field season for most of our athletes, and they faced opposition from throughout the north-east, with clubs from Co Meath, Co Louth and Newry especially well represented on a lovely sunny day.

Three of our athletes produced outstanding performances to win their individual events: Caoimhe McMahon (U14 Long Jump 4.25m), Declan Gernon (U10 Long Jump 3.04m) and Gabriel Bell (U7 60m). Declan was also 2nd in the U10 80m and 3rd in the U11 High Jump (1.05m). Several other St Peter's athletes also finished in 2nd or 3rd place: Kevin McManus (2nd Senior High Jump 1.70m, 2nd Senior Long Jump 5.38m, 2nd Senior Shot Putt 7.70m), Olivia McDonald (2nd Senior 100m, 2nd Senior Long Jump 4.65m, 3rd Senior Shot Putt 7.64m), Eoin Gernon (3rd Senior High Jump 1.45m), Maria Duffy (3rd Senior High Jump 1.35m), Ian McDonald (3rd U16 Long Jump 4.47m) and Joseph Mullen (2nd U12 Shot Putt 5.70m). In addition our Senior Mixed 4x100m relay team (Olivia McDonald, Kevin McManus, Eoin Gernon, Maria Duffy) won their event, while our Boys U11 4x100m team (Declan Gernon, Liam Fussey, Cian Duffy, Michael Mullen) finished in 3rd place.

The following athletes also competed in Cushinstown and performed well against stiff competition: Éamon McManus, Pauraic McGinn, Aaron Byrne, Martin McGrane, Jack O'Brien, Daniel Mullen, Oisín Duffy, Aisling Byrne, Aisling Gernon, Niamh Fussey, Lisa McDonald, Niamh Mernagh, Daire Hoey, Elizabeth Bell, Nikayla Hamill and Orlaith McMahon. At the end of the track events there were 100m races for dads and mums. The St Peter's parents showed their kids how it's done with Tom McGrane winning the dads' race and Bernadette Muckian just pipping Angela McDonald to win the mums' race! Of course Maria Duffy had already shown the way by her performances in the Senior events.

Over the next few days the St Peter's athletes will have their first championship events of the summer. Some of our athletes will be competing in the North Leinster Schools' Championships tomorrow (Thursday 3rd May), while the Louth County Championships for the juvenile age groups (U8 to U19) will be held this weekend. The High Jump events will be held at the St Joseph's GAA Ground in Dromiskin on Friday 4th May at 7pm, while all other events will be held at the new "Tartan" track in Bush on Saturday 5th May (Javelin 10am, other events 11am) and Sunday 6th May (Javelin 10am, other events 12 noon).
