31 October 2007

Last weekend was a quiet one on the competitive front for the athletes of Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC. However the club members and their parents were not idle, as they spent Saturday packing bags for shoppers in Superquinn, Dundalk. The success of this fund raising venture is due to the generosity of Superquinn's customers, the assistance of the store's management and staff, and the efforts of those from the club who came along on the day. All at St Peter's sincerely appreciate the contribution of all those involved.

For the next two Saturdays (3rd and 10th November) there will be special training sessions for high jumpers, long jumpers and throwers in the indoor facilities at Cushinstown AC in County Meath. These are for County Louth athletes from 12 years old upwards, and will take place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. These sessions are being organised by Maria Duffy, one of the coaches with St Peter's AC, who is also the Development Officer for athletics in the county. Maria will be joined in Cushinstown by other leading coaches from the North Leinster region.

There will be no training tomorrow night (Thursday) for the younger St Peter's athletes. However the older athletes will train as normal at 7 p.m.

24 October 2007

Last Sunday several athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC competed in the Kearney Cup Cross Country meet at Bush. This annual open event, which had races for all age groups and was hosted with great hospitality by Glenmore AC, attracted athletes from throughout North Leinster and South Ulster.

The star performers for the mid-Louth club were Ailbhe McGuinness and Sorcha Conway. Sorcha followed on from her excellent runs in the Louth Championships over the previous two weekends by running a very steady and strong race to win the Under 18 Girls' event. 14 year old Ailbhe was very impressive in the Under 16 Girls' race, as she stayed close to the leaders until the final metres and then sprinted clear for a great victory. Aisling Byrne also joined Ailbhe on the starting line for this race. She had unfortunately missed the start of the Under 14 race, but bravely had a go alongside the older girls.

In the Under 12 Girls' race Daire Hoey finished in the top 10 and thus won a medal. Three of the five St Peter's boys in the Under 10 race also finished in the top 10 and came home with medals. They were Conor Hoey, Cian Duffy and Alex Hannefey. Their teammates, Ciarán Conway and Aaron Byrne, were not far behind.

Two of the club's youngest members – Gabriel Bell and Dervla Conway - ran well in the Under 8 races, while the more experienced Kevin Barry Mackin also had a good run in the combined Senior and Masters' Men's race.

This Saturday (27th October) St Peter's members and their parents will be packing bags for shoppers in Superquinn, Dundalk. Your support for this fund raising venture will be greatly appreciated by all at the club.

17 October 2007

Last Sunday a total of 18 athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC competed in the second instalment of this year's Louth Cross Country Championships. The Intermediate championships and the Juvenile championships for the uneven age groups were held at St Mary's GAA grounds in Ardee.

Hilary Kerr was the star performer for St Peter's at the mid-Louth venue, taking the gold medal in the Under 17 Girls' event over 2000m. Hilary, whose main event is the Long Jump, ran a very controlled race just behind the leader all the way from the gun to within sight of the finish line. She then used her undoubted speed in the closing metres to stride clear to a very impressive victory.

Sorcha Conway, better known as a Javelin thrower, also showed that the field eventers from the Dromiskin club are not lacking in aerobic fitness, with a fine bronze medal performance in the Under 19 Girls' 3000m race.

At the other end of the age scale Conor Hoey recovered well from being left well behind the leaders after a hectic start in the Under 9 Boys' race. The youngster stormed through the field over the 500m distance to finish in 3rd place for another bronze medal for St Peter's. Conor was partnered in this race by Alex Hannefey, who ran well to finish in 9th place.

The club's Under 11 Boys' team just missed out on a team medal in their 800m race as they finished in 4th place. Liam Fussey led them home in 12th place, followed by Cian Duffy in 15th, Michael Mullen in 18th, Aaron Byrne in 19th and Pádraig McGinn in 24th. Ciarán Conway also started this race, but unfortunately was forced to withdraw due to injury.

In the Under 11 Girls' race over 800m Elizabeth Bell and Orlaith McMahon both ran well, finishing in 15th and 27th places respectively. 1000m was the distance for the Under 13 Boys' race, and Joseph Mullen ran strongly to finish in 7th place in this event. Three girls from St Peter's contested the Under 15 championship over 1500m. Caoimhe Hoey impressed as she led them home in 7th place, with javelin thrower Brianán Conway not far behind in 9th. Aisling Byrne started very well in this race, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.

Brother and sister, Kevin Barry Mackin and Fiona Mackin, competed in the Intermediate championship races. Fiona came in 4th in the Women's 4000m, race while Kevin Barry finished 5th in the Men's 8000m race.

Next Sunday Bush will be the venue for Glenmore AC's open cross country meet. Meanwhile the St Peter's athletes are continuing to build on their good start to their winter training programme, with the mild October weather proving a welcome bonus.

10 October 2007

Last Sunday a total of 29 athletes from Dromiskin-based St Peter's AC competed in the first instalment of this year's Louth Cross Country Championships. The Novice championships and the Juvenile championships for the even age groups were held at St Fechin's GAA grounds at Beaulieu near Termonfeckin.

The club's Under 18 Girls' team was the most successful of the St Peter's entrants at the South Louth venue on a lovely sunny day, which would have done justice to any track and field meet at the height of the summer. Hilary Kerr came home in 2nd place at the end of the 3000m race. Sorcha Conway and Olivia McDonald were not far behind her in 3rd and 4th places respectively. These fine performances resulted in the Dromiskin outfit winning the team gold medal.

Also impressing was the Under 10 Boys' team which won the team silver medal for their 800m race. Conor Hoey led the way for the St Peter's youngsters in 5th place. The other scoring members were Michael Mullen in 8th, Ciarán Conway in 9th and Aaron Byrne in 17th, while Cian Duffy, Alex Hannefey and Martin McGrane also ran on this team.

In the Under 8 events there were no team awards, but the first six individuals won medals instead. In the Boys' race, Gabriel Bell claimed a medal as he finished the 400m distance in 4th place, with Daniel Mullen just outside the medals in 7th place.

At Under 12 level Éamon McManus impressed with 4th place in the Boys' 1000m race. Joseph Mullen and Pádraig McGinn also competed in this event. In the Girls' race in this age group, St Peter's were represented by Daire Hoey, Elizabeth Bell, Megan Finnegan and Máire Cáit Byrne.

Aisling McKeen, Niamh Fussey, Caoimhe McMahon and Aisling Byrne represented the Dromiskin club in the Under 14 Girls' event, while Caoimhe Hoey and Brianán Conway were the standard bearers in the Girls' Under 16 race over 2000m.

Sisters Maria Duffy and Fiona Mackin finished 5th and 7th in the Novice Women's 3000m race. Kevin Barry Mackin and Tom McGrane started the Novice Men's 6000m event, but unfortunately both had to withdraw during the race due to injury.

The previous day (Saturday) two of St Peter's javelin throwers, brother and sister Peter McDonald and Olivia McDonald, travelled to Tullamore for a National Senior Throws Squad day. They found this very informative and are looking forward to the next session on 24 November.

The club training sessions for younger athletes are currently being held in Dromiskin each Tuesday and Thursday evening. These now start at the earlier time of 6:00 p.m. and finish at 7:00 p.m.
