Harry O’Reilly and Ben McKeown worked really well together in a large field of competitors with both finishing strongly.

The girls under eleven race was over a 1000M course and the club had a team of three runners, all three had really brave performances with Ellie Smyth finishing sixth to claim an individual medal and was greatly supported by her two team mates Katie Mulligan and Izabel Fitzpatrick to win the bronze team medals. The boys under 11 had to brave performances from Conor Litchfield and Cormac McKeown with both showing massive improvements on previous performances.

The girls under 12 was over a 1500M distance with Niamh Brady and Lucy Smith battling well to finish 7th and 8th respectively. The boys under 12 the club had a team of three athletes with Sean Allen leading them home with a fourth place finish followed by a very impressive finish by Cian Loy in eighth and Mark Litchfield. The three boys’ efforts earned them a silver team medal victory. Morgan Quigley was also in action in the boys under fifteen race which was over 2000M and ran strongly to finish in 7th place.

On Saturday evening the Blackrock 4 mile road race took place and the club was represented with Brendan Rogers being the first of the club Athletes to cross the finish line followed by Eoghan Smyth and Eilish Brady who was making her debut in road racing.

This week was a quiet week on the athletics front. However our athletes are in training in preparation for the upcoming cross country season which kicks off this Sunday with the traditional opener at Stamullen when the Star of the Sea club host their open cross country meeting which caters for all juvenile age groups as well as adult races. Our athletes have also received a welcome boost when they received new training tops which were part sponsored by tyre manufacturer Bridgestone. Local club Blackrock AC will hold their annual four mile road race on Saturday night and it is hoped that our senior and master athletes will be in action there.

One athlete who was in action at the weekend was our top juvenile shot putter Martin McGrane. Martin has really worked hard at his strength training in the past year - so much so that he now competes in powerlifting during the track and field off-season. On Sunday last Martin competed in the European Single Lifts Championships which were held in Amsterdam. Martin lifted 240kg to win the deadlift competition and set a new Irish record in the Under 20 age group.
