Saint Peters AC Athlete Conor Durnin was in action at the weekend when he travelled as part of the Irish Universities’ team that took part in Celtic Universities’ International Competition in Glasgow. Conor is enjoying a great season and last weekend delivered on the big stage by winning gold in the triple jump with a massive leap of 13.70M he then followed this by collecting his second medal of the competition by winning bronze in the long jump.

Mark Rogers was in action in the National Senior Combined events on Saturday. Mark ran 12.19 in the 100M, he then jumped 5.93M in the long jump, he threw 10.43 in the shot putt and he had an excellent high jump of 1.91. In the 400M Mark ran 54.68 and in the 110M hurdles he ran 17.93. In the discus Mark threw 27.95, he pole vaulted 2.7M he threw 34.32 in the javelin and finished off with a strong 1500M run. When the points for each event were totalled the St Peters Athlete who is still young in the senior ranks was awarded the bronze medal.

Andrew Rogers was in action in the Oran Foundation 5 Mile run which took place in glorious sunshine in Stabannon on Sunday at midday, Andrew ran a good race on a testing course with a time of 37.16.

This weekend the club has two Athletes in action in the All Ireland schools championships when Katie Murphy and Gabriel Bell go into battle in the Shot Putt and Long Jump Competitions respectively and our younger athletes will take part in the annual Blackrock Beach Races which is always a very enjoyable event.

A small contingent of St Peters AC athletes made the trip to Greystones Co Wicklow to take part in the Leinster Juvenile Relay Championships on Saturday last. The club was represented by both boys and girls under twelve teams and both acquitted themselves very well.

The girls team ran excellent to finish in second place in their heat. The team then had to wait nervously to find out if they had made the final as only the winners of the three heats were guranteed a place with the remaining three places going to the fastest runners up of the three heats. The girls were rewarded for their efforts when they took their place on the start line however it wasn’t to be their day as they finished outside the medals. The girls team consisted of Judith Bell, Julie McLouhghlin, Lucy Smith and Niamh Brady.

The boys also ran their hearts out but unfortunately they missed out on a place in the final by half a second. The boys team consisted of Dean Murtagh, Sean Allen, Cian Loy and Mark Litchfield. Both teams really enjoyed the event and will have learned from the experiance.

On Thursday last the Drogheda and District club hosted a graded meeting at the Lourdes Stadium. Tom McGrane was in action in the shot Putt competition and with a throw of 9.22M finished in second place. Andrew Rogers was also in action in the 5000M race and evan though he strained a calf muscle with 600M to go he managed to finish in a time of 23.09.

This week athletes return to training as focus will now be on the upcoming Leinster Championships which commence on Saturday the 11th of June. The club also hope to have some teams compete in the Leinster team event which will take place on the bank holiday Monday in Tullamore.

Following a very successful Louth Juvenile Athletics Championships last weekend the St Peter’s athletes have returned to training with a new found optimism as they now prepare for the Leinster Championships which takes place in June.

The Leinster schools Championship took place this week over two days Wednesday and Saturday. Katie Murphy representing St Louis secondary school Dundalk was once again top of the podium with an excellent win in the junior Shot Putt competition with a throw of 11.97M. Katie is once again enjoying a fantastic season and will go into the upcoming All Ireland Schools with great optimism.

Gabriel Bell was in action on Saturday when he took part in the Intermediate Long Jump Competition. Gabriel is still eligible for this section next year but that didn’t deter this very focused young athlete as he produced a top drawer performance to win a silver medal and also qualify for the All Ireland Schools. Gabriel produced is best ever jump when he leaped to a massive 6.15M breaking the PB he had just set the previous week.

The club had three athletes make the short journey to Navan on Sunday to take part in the Meath clubs hurdles competition. Niamh Brady and Judith Bell both had fine runs in the girls under 12 race and couldn’t be separated and shared third place. Sean Allen then took his place on the Start Line of the boys under 12 race and finished in second place.

The three then continued their road trip when they travelled to Santry to compete in the Clonliffe Harriers open sports day with all three adding medals to their collection. Niamh Brady won silver in the under 12 80M sprint and Bronze in the Long Jump, Judith Bell won silver in the Long jump and Sean Allen won silver in the boys under 12 80M sprint.

This weekend the Leinster Juvenile relay Championships take place in Greystones and the club are sending two teams, boys and girls both in the under twelve age category.

Last weekend saw the annual Louth Juvenile Track and Field Championships took place over three days at the weekend. The St Peter’s Club was very well represented on all three days and the Dromiskin based club returned home with a fantastic haul of medals.

Gabriel Bell was once again the St Peter’s AC Kingpin with a haul of four gold medals. Gabriel started his championship on Friday night when he won both the under 16 Long jump and high Jump breaking the Championship Record in both with a Long Jump of 5.81M and then a high jump of 1.71M which was PB. He then went on to win both the 100M and 200M sprints to cap off a fantastic Championship.

Chloe Finley was also in form on Friday night when she took gold in the under 19 girls’ Long jump with a jump of 4.91m and collected another gold medal in the Shot Putt with a throw of 9.48m.

Katie Murphy was as expected the winner of the girls under 16 Shot putt with a throw of 10.96 and also in the under 16 girls category Ava Brennan put in a great display winning three medals with a second place finish in the hurdles, a third place finish in the Long Jump with a jump of 4.28M but Ava kept the best till last winning the Gold medal in the High jump with a jump of 1.30M.

The club’s male shot putters were also in action on Friday night with Martin McGrane winning gold in the under 19 with a throw of 9.85 and Craig Murtagh with a throw of 9.14 winning the boys under 17 title.

Morgan Quigley made his debut for the club on Friday night when he competed over hurdles for the first time in the boys under 14 with a second place finish, he was also in action on Saturday when he again won silver in the 800M and completed his haul of medals when he won silver in the Long jump which again was a great achievement as it was his first time competing in a long jump competition.

Niamh Brady produced two great performances in both jumping competitions for the girls under twelves winning gold in both the high jump and long jump, Niamh Jumped 1.25M in the high jump and set a new championship record in the Long jump with a massive jump of 4.36M, she also won a silver medal in the girls under 60M hurdles. Her training partner Judith Bell was just behind her every step of the way winning silver in both the high jump with a jump of 1.20m and in the long jump with a jump of 3.95M, Judith was also just behind Niamh in the hurdles winning a well-earned bronze.

Julie McLoughlin ran well in her 80M sprint heat to win her heat and was just outside the medals in the final however Julie’s best performance came in the 600M race, with a very brave run to finish third and win a bronze medal. Lucy Smith also ran a great heat in her 80M heat with a second place finish.

Rory McLoughlin was also in great form winning two silver medals and one gold. Rory ran really well in the under 13 80M sprint and followed this by a solid run in the 600m for a very close finish however he saved the best for Sunday when he leaped to 4.14M to win the gold medal.

The clubs under twelve boys that were competing were all in the medals. Sean Allen got the ball rolling on Friday night winning gold in the 60M hurdles, he then won bronze in high jump with a jump of 1.10M and finished off winning gold in the Long Jump with a jump of 3.93M. Dean Murtagh won silver in the Shot putt with a throw of 6.75M. Newcomer Mark Litchfield won bronze medals in the 80M sprint and 600M races with a real gutsy effort in the 600.

The clubs under eleven girls were on the podium with Lucy Brennan winning gold in long jump with a jump of 3.46 and Katie Mulligan won bronze with a jump of 3.30. Katie O’Reilly and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick both ran well in their 60m and 600M.

The boys under eleven all tried hard with Cormac McKeown, Lorcan Finnegan and Conor Litchfield who was just outside the medals in the 600M after a very brave run. Harry O’Reilly and Matthew Durnin had great runs in the under 10 500M with 2nd and third place finished respectively. Harry also won bronze in the 60M. Ben McKeown ran a great heat to qualify for semi-final in the 60M. Liam McQuillan also had a good run in the sprint.

Dearbhla Allen was the clubs sole representative in the girls under ten category and although outside the medals she couldn’t be faulted for her effort.

The boys under 9 Ryan Murtagh and Oran Garavagila made their championship debuts and will benefit from the experience as will the under 9 girls < span class=athletename>Catherine Carey and < span class=athletename>Mia Finnegan. Orla McLoughlin also making her debut wasn’t letting her big brother and sister have all the glory in their house with a third place finish in the sprint and winning the Long jump and setting a new championship best with a jump of 3.06M

The days concluded with relay races and the club had success in the boys and girls under twelve races with both winning silver. The girls’ team was Judith Bell, Julie McLoughlin, Ellie Smyth and Niamh Brady while the boys’ team consisted of Dean Murtagh, Sean Allen, Cian Loy and Mark Litchfield and Conor Litchfield as sub for the boys. Both teams ran really well and pushed the winning teams right to the line. The under 13 boys also were in the medals when they won bronze with Dean Murtagh, Rory McLoughlin, Jack O’Reilly and Mark Litchfield.

Also in action at the weekend was club senior shot putter Tom McGrane who travelled to the Mary Peters Track in Belfast. Tom threw a season’s best of 9.47m which earned him victory at the Belfast International meet.
