Following on from the more senior side of the club’s successes in the inter universities’ championships it was the turn of the St Peters AC secondary school Athletes to represent their respective schools in the North Leinster Schools Championships.

Gabriel Bell and Katie Murphy once again were to the fore with both winning gold medals. Gabriel Bell representing De La Salle College who enjoyed success last year at Junior level jumped an impressive 5.62M in the Intermediate section this time. Gabriel who is a multi-talented Athlete and particularly good jumper is enjoying a good season and it is hoped this will continue into the Louth Championships.

The St Peters AC number one female thrower Katie Murphy who was representing St Louis Secondary School once again delivered on the big stage with a very convincing performance, Katie threw 12.20M to win by a considerable distance. This is no more than this very dedicated athlete deserves for her application and dedication to her training.

Chloe Finley also returned to competitive action when representing Bush Post Primary school with an excellent place in the Long Jump and followed this by being part of her school relay team which won silver. Others representing their schools were Ava Brennan and Eoghan Smith.

Training continues this week as Athletes prepare for the upcoming Louth Championships which will take place the weekend after next as the club adjusts to life without coach Angela McDonald, it is hoped that Angela will make a speedy recovery from her recent surgery and all at the club wish her well.

Finally the St Peters club would like to congratulate our county Chairperson Georgina Drumm on her recent election as President of Athletics Ireland at the National Congress held in Tullamore at the weekend and all at the club wish her continued success in the year ahead.

The Irish Universities’ Championships took place in Santry over the weekend and the St Peter’s club had a total five athletes representing their various colleges competing. Conor Durnin, who is enjoying a fantastic season, was the star of the show with a fantastic performance in the Triple Jump with a season best and indeed an outdoor PB of 13.87M to win the gold medal. To win a gold at the Irish Universities’ is a fantastic achievement and is just reward for Conor who also enjoyed success earlier in the year in the National indoors.

Mark Rogers was also on the Podium when he won a hard earned Bronze medal in the combined events. Mark ran 16.49 in the 110M hurdles (a new PB) he jumped 1.80M in the high jump followed by a new PB of 6.11M in the Long jump, he then threw 10.31 in the shot Putt and finished off with a very impressive time of 4.49.20 in the 1500M. Mark’s total of points came to 3043 which was enough to win him a much coveted bronze medal. The following day he decided to take part in the 3000M walk and was unlucky not to medal and finished in 4th place.

Mark’s sister Emily Rogers was also on the podium with a third place finish in the high jump. The conditions while Emily was jumping were not ideal and a below par jump of 1.60M earned her a bronze medal to complete a trio of medal winners for both St Peter’s AC and DCU.

The father and son combination of Tom McGrane and Martin McGrane were also competing both representing DIT with Tom throwing a season best of 9.35M in the shot putt, 20.58 in the discus and 16.91 in the hammer. While Martin didn’t enjoy his first taste of the Universities’ Championship with two fouls and a slip on his third throw.

On Sunday a contingent of the St Peter’s AC made the short journey to Cushinstown AC for their annual sports day event. Lucy Brennan continued her excellent form in the Long jump to collect her second gold medal in as many weeks, Niamh Brady was unfortunate not to medal in both the long jump and high jump with fourth place finishes in both but had the satisfaction of achieving a new PB in the high jump and shouldn’t be too disappointed as she was competing out of her age group along with Julie McLoughlin who also jumped well. Both girls also took part in the 100M and 300M races with Niamh having a fine run in the 100M to finish in 4th and Julie having an excellent run in the 300M finishing just outside the medals.

Rory McLoughlin, who missed the pre Louths due to illness, enjoyed a successful return to competition with an excellent performance in the long jump to win gold, he then followed this in the afternoon with a third place finish in the 100M and a second place finish in the 300M. Katie Murphy once again blew all her competitors away when she won the under 16 shot putt competition with considerable ease to continue her excellent season to date.

The club also had good performances from Ryan Murtagh in the under 9 sprint, his older brother Dean Murtagh competed well in the sprint, shot putt and turbo javelin as did his training buddy Ronan Deery who also had a decent jump in the under 13 long jump along with Cian Loy and although neither medalled the experience of the competition will stand to them as both had to move up an age.

The local 5k event the Patsy Kelly 5k which was hosted by local club North East Runners with club chairman Brendan Rogers leading home the St Peter’s challenge with a time of 21.20 closely followed by his brother Andrew Rogers and Eamon O’Reilly who ran 23.34.
