29 March 2016

The annual Mountpleasant Road Races took place on Easter Monday which consisted of juvenile races for even ages at various distances followed by a 5K race for Junior, Senior and Master Athletes.

Harry O’Reilly led from start to finish in the boys under ten race for his second win of the season. Harry was made work all the way but his dedication to his training paid off as he pulled away from the rest of the field over the last 100 metres. Ben McKeown won his first medal when he ran very bravely to finish in sixth position and Liam McQuillan finished closely behind just outside the medals. Dearbhla Allen ran a very good second half of her race as she came from far back to pass out most of her competitors’ to finish in seventh place and was unlucky not to medal as the first six received medals.

In the girls under twelve Niamh Brady finished in second place having led from the start up until the last fifty metres and was closely followed by Lucy Smyth who was unlucky not to medal as she made a great effort in the closing stages of the race to finish just outside the medals. In the boys under twelve Dean Murtagh and Cormac McKeown ran well and will have gained great experience from the race. Sean Allen also started the boys under twelve race but pulled up at the half way point with a recurring injury.

In the adult race veteran brothers Andrew Rogers and Brendan Rogers ran very well with Brendan coming in with a time of 21.24 and Andrew with a time of 22.12. Luke Finley also ran in a time of 19.54 in his last run for St Peters AC as he will now transfer to neighbouring club North East Runners and although the club are very sad to be losing a young athlete with a lot of potential all at the club wish him well.

This week focus in training turns totally to the upcoming track and field season with the pre Louth Championships only two weeks away.

The National Juvenile Indoor Championships came to a conclusion last weekend at the fantastic arena at Athlone IT. The club was represented by shot putter Martin McGrane who has enjoyed a rich vein of form since the begining of the year. Martin has spent a lot of time over the winter doing gym work and as reaped the rewards with setting new PBs and winning medals since the turn of the year. However unfortunately his performance was slighty below par and although he had a very respectable throw of 10.15m it fell just short of the medal positions with a sixth place finish. Martin will now focus on the upcomming outdoor season with great optimism and will concentrate on the technical side of the sport as he has acheived a great strength base with his winter training.

With Easter upon us, the Annual Mountpleasent Road Races will take place on Easter Monday at twelve oclock. The programme will commence with juvenile races from under 8 to under 16 followed by a 5K for senior Athletes. It is hoped that the club will have a large number of Athletes in attendance as this is always a most enjoyable event. Training will resume on Tuesday however there will be no training on holy Thursday. After a very succesful indoor season Athletes are eagerly awaiting the commencment of the outdoor Track and Field season which kick off on Saturday the 9th of April when the pre-Louth Championships will take place at the Lourdes Stadium in Drogheda. It is expected that our ever growing club will have a record amount of Athletes Competing. Athletes and coaches are delighted with the longer evenings that we are at last able to use our new excellent facilities for training with our new Long Jump, throwing area and our state of the art the lane 60M track which hopefully will help our sprinters and Hurdlers.

15 March 2016

The Athlone IT arena set the scene for the National Juvenile Indoor Championships which took place last weekend over Saturday and Sunday. St Peter’s AC had a total of five athletes competing over the two days

Katie Murphy was the star of the show for the club when she showed her quality by throwing a massive 12.08 metres to win the U16 girls’ shot putt. This was a fantastic show of character by Katie as only last week she had to settle for silver in the Leinster championship, but the national title was always her goal and nothing was going to stop this determined young lady from achieving it.

Earlier in the day Dean Murtagh took part in the U12 boys’ shot putt event. This was Dean’s first National Championships following on from his excellent Leinster Championship the previous week; he gained valuable experience and is one to watch for the future.

The club had three jumpers in action. Gabriel Bell added another All Ireland medal to his already impressive haul when he won a bronze medal in the U16 long jump. Gabriel jumped 5.99m which was a fantastic jump to win a bronze medal in a very high quality field some two cm clear of fourth place.

Niamh Brady, who last week set a new Leinster Championship record in the U12 girls’ high jump, went into battle with her club mate Judith Bell, unfortunately for the two girls it wasn’t their day and neither could re-produce the same form as last week with jumps of 1.20m and 1.10m respectively. Niamh who had also qualified for the Long jump also had a below par performance with a jump of 3.87m to finish outside the medals. Both of these girls were making their National Championships debuts and both will have gained valuable experience as they both have unquestionable ability.

As the juvenile indoor season draws to a close and the longer evenings not too far away, the athletes will now concentrate on the outdoor track and field season with some optimism following on from the indoor season.

The club would like to extend our sincere sympathy to club stalwarts Brendan Rogers and Andrew Rogers and families on the death of their mother Ettie; may she rest in peace.

8 March 2016

There were medals galore for St Peter’s AC athletes of all ages as they took part in last weekend’s Leinster Indoor Championships in Athlone.

First up were the Juvenile events on Saturday and there was a double celebration in the U12 Girls’ High Jump as Niamh Brady won the gold medal in style with a leap of 1.29m to set a new championship best performance ahead of clubmate Judith Bell, who won bronze with a leap of 1.20m. In the U12 Boys’ Shot Putt Dean Murtagh enjoyed a great day, winning silver. These were great achievements by the club’s young athletes.

Not letting his sister take all the credit, Gabriel Bell won bronze in the U16 Boys’ High Jump with a leap of 1.70m while Katie Murphy, who took part in the U16 Girls’ Shot Putt, won a silver medal with a throw of 11.57m. Eoghan Smyth also took part in the U15 Boys’ 60m and ran well.

Elsewhere on Saturday, club masters athlete Andrew Rogers took part in the Carlingford 10K Road Race and recorded a personal best.

On Sunday it was the turn of the club’s junior (U20), senior and masters’ athletes to compete at the Leinster Indoor Championships. Martin McGrane competed in the Junior Men’s Shot Putt where he finished in 4th place with a putt of 10.70m. In the Senior Men’s Shot Putt Tom McGrane finished 3rd overall behind two guest athletes from Connacht and hence he won the Leinster title.

Mark Rogers was also crowned Leinster senior champion, as he scooped gold in the Men’s High Jump with a leap of 1.80m. He later finished 4th in his heat of the 400m (and 7th overall) with a time of 54.48. Emily Rogers, Mark’s sister, competed in the Senior Women’s High Jump and finished in 2nd position, equalling her season’s best performance of 1.70m. To complete a family affair, dad Brendan Rogers took gold in the masters’ M55 long jump with a leap of 4.33m and also won bronze in the 60m sprint.

Condolences are extended to Siobhan Allen and the Reilly family on the death of Tommy Reilly, who was well known in the community and county.

1 March 2016

The highlight of the Indoor season took place last weekend in the Athlone IT arena when the National Senior Indoor Championships took place over Saturday and Sunday. St Peters AC had three athletes competing.

On Sunday the senior shot Putt competiton took place and it was the father and son combination of Tom McGrane and Martin McGrane that took centre stage for the Dromiskin based club. Tom threw a season best of 9.14 to finish in 11th position and Martin who has really looked at home since moving up to the senior category threw 9.78M to finish in 9th position.

The previous day the clubs number one high jumper was in action, Emily Rogers went into battle following on from her recent sucesses in the national U23 and Irish Universities championships. Emily had a great jump of 1.70M which was equal to both the 2nd and third place position but unfortunately for Emily luck was not on her side as she lost out on a medal on countback and finished in 4th place.

Our younger athletes made the short journey to Gormanstown college for the annual Boyne AC indoor meeting. This is a great event to kick start the track and field season and is also a great introduction to competition for the beginers. The club had athletes competing in all the age categories.

In the 60M sprints the club had three silver medal winners with Niamh Brady in the girls under 12, Rory McLoughlin in the boys under 14 and Eoghan Smyth under 16. In the 600M races both Niamh Brady and Rory McLoughlin finished second in their respective under 13 races. The club also fielded relay teams in all ages groups with all doing very well.

This week the attention turns back to days 3 and 4 of the Leinster indoor season with athletes making the journey once again to the Athlone IT arena.
