Saint Peters AC were in action on Thursday night last as some of the clubs Athletes, Coaches and supporters travelled in force to the city of Armagh for the Annual Road Races. In what was a most enjoyable evening for all who travelled the athletes really did themselves and the club proud. The event itself in an excellent event and the organisers deserve massive credit for how efficiently they manage to cater for such large numbers of juveniles and then top class senior races in a brilliant sporting atmosphere.

The St Peters young athletes were not phased by the large numbers in each of the races in which the first ten received trophies, the club had twenty six athletes competing and managed a haul of ten trophies which made for a very enjoyable coach ride home.

The programme commenced with the boys under 9 race which was run over 400M, the club had two athletes running in this race and both did very well with Oran Garavaglia managing to win his first trophy with a seventh place finish and Ryan Murtagh not far behind him unfortunately just outside the prizes. The girl under 9 followed and Orla McLoughlin led home the three club Athletes competing with a 4th place finish, Mia Finnegan and Catherine Carey also ran very strongly.

The boys under eleven was the highlight for the club with two of the athletes finishing in the top ten. Jack McLaughlin who is improving every week ran very bravely over the 1400M course and finished in an excellent 2nd place closely followed by Harry O’Reilly who is still under 10 in 10th place. Brothers Cormac McKeown and Ben McKeown and Lorcan Finnegan also ran very well and all the can be very proud of how well they ran over the longer course than they would be used to. The girls under eleven also produced fine displays from the St Peters club, Ellie Smith led the club challenge home in tenth place very closely followed by Dearbhla Allen, Katie Mulligan, Isabel Fitzpatrick, Lucy Brennan and Katie O’Reilly.

The boys under 13 produced another fine run by recently crowned Leinster 600M indoor champion Rory McLoughlin. Rory had a really good run over the 1400M distance to finish in third place. Cian Loy, Jack O’Reilly, Dean Murtagh and Ronan Deery also represented the club in this race and had really fine runs. The girls under thirteen also produced silverware for the club in the shape of Niamh Brady with a sixth place finish. Julie McLoughlin who is beginning to regain her energy levels after illness just missed out on the trophies and was closely followed by Lucy Smyth and Judith Bell. All of the girls are eligible for the same race next year. Eoghan Smith completed the night from a competitor perspective for the Club and did well over the longer distance of 2400M in the boys under 15 race in what would be the longest distance he would have run.

This weekend the Boyne Indoor Sports day takes place at Gormanston College and the club would expect to have a large turnout of Athletes while the National Senior Indoor championships will take place in Athlone. Club members are reminded that our club AGM will take place this Tuesday at 8pm after training.

Sean Allen missed out narrowly on a medal in the boys 60 M hurdles in the under twelve age group with a very close 4th place finish, unfortunately for Sean in doing so he agrivated a niggling thigh injury which has being bothering him recently which caused him to withdraw from his strongest event the 600m. Dean Murtagh took his place on the start line in his heat of the 600M, but although he ran his heart out unfortunately for Dean he was drawn in a tough heat and just missed out on qualifing for the final. 9 February 2016

On Sunday last the annual Rás na hÉireann brought down the curtain on the cross country season in Louth until the Autumn. Oldbridge was the venue for this prestigious event and the many athletes who took part could not have hoped for better running conditions considering the amount of rain in recent times as there was really good running on the course.

St Peter’s AC were very well represented in both the juvenile and adult races. The first race of the busy programme was the girls under nine and the club had two athletes competing over the 500m course. Orla McLoughlin ran a great race was very unfortunate not to medal, Mia Finnegan closely followed and both represented the club with pride. Ryan Murtagh was the only representitive from the club in the boys under nine but that didnt deter this gutsy little runner who looked very much at home in the big field finishing just outside the medals.

In the girls under eleven the club had a team of four competing with Ellie Smith who is getting stronger each week following her recent lay off due to sickness was starting to show glimses of what she is capable of with a strong run closely followed by her buddy Isabel Fitzpatrick, Lucy Brennan and Katie O’Reilly finished soon after the girls and all four can be very proud of themselves. The boys under eleven race followed and the boys had a strong team competing and were unfoutunate not to win team medals. Jack McLaughlin led the St Peters team home and won his first individual medal with a sixth place finish just a head of his club mate and recent Blackrock Cross Country winner Harry O’Reilly, Cormac McKeown ran a very good race to finish 11th a massive improvement on previous outings, the team was completed by Lorcan Finnegan who ran very bravely.

The girls under thirteen race soon followed and Niamh Brady who has had a long cross country season ran a very comfortable pace to finish just outside the medals, the ever improving Lucy Smith was also well up the large field. The boys under thirteen race saw Rory McLoughlin collect an individual medal with a strong run which saw him finish 5th, Cian Loy ran his best race to date with a very strong run and Dean Murtagh battled his way through the many competitiors to a very strong finish.

The senior master and junior womens race was ran over a 3k distance and the club was delighted to welcome back Chloe Finley to cross country competition. Chloe ran very strongly and her recent application to her training was rewarded when she collect a bronze medal as being the third junior lady. The final race of the day was the mens race which was run over a 6k distance, veteren campaigner Andrew Rogers flew the Blue and Black flag in this and ran a very comfortable race.

With the Cross Country season over now untill the Autumn the clubs attention now turns to the upcomming Leinster Juvenile Indoor Championships which commences in the Athlone IT arena nxt weekend. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday in the Joes Clubrooms and Athletes are reminded that any outstanding registration must be paid ASAP in order to compete and train with the club.

2 February 2016

Just a month into the new year and St Peters AC have started the new year in the same fashion that they finished off 2015, unbeliveably a month into the new year and the club has already won five national medals. This week Athlone was once again the venue as three of the clubs Athletes traveled and all performed to a very high standard.

High jumper Emily Rogers continued her form from the previous year she won another Irish title, the Togher native went one better than her father and brother last week who won national Bronze and Silver in the combined events respectivly when she leaped to 1.66M to win the gold medal and become National under 23 indoor high jump champion.

Conor Durnin who was also competing in the under tweny three category started off his season in excellent fashion when he won his first All Ireland medal in two years with an excellent triple jump performance with a jump of 13.63M. It was great to see Conor back to his best and the club is very optimistic for his prospects in the comming year.

Shot Putter Martin McGrane was also in action in Athlone in the junior section and again this talanted thrower had a very enjoyable outing in the midlands. Martin threw 10.43M which equals his second best throw ever and gives him great optimisim for the year a head to be throwing so well at such an early stage in the year, the throw earned Martin a very respectible 7th place finish.

While our three Athletes were competing in the comforts of the Athlone IT Arena our younger Athletes were braving the elements in the excellently run Blackrock AC cross country event. The first of the St Peters Athletes in action was in the girls under 9 race, these girls were making their debuts in cross country running but you wouldn’t think that to look at them as the three girls landed the gold team medals with outstanding runs from Orla McLoughlin in 4th, Catherine Carey in 11th and Mia Finnegan in 12th. In the boys under 9 Ryan Murtagh ran a very brave race to finish sixth in a big field.

The girls under eleven battle well and were unlucky to finish outside the team medals, the team was led home By Dearbhla Allen closely followed by Ellie Smith, Isabel Fitzpatrick and Lucy Brennan. Harry O’Reilly was the star of the St Peters show with an excellent win in the boys under eleven race, harry who is still under ten led from start to finish in a very powerful display, newly crowned club man of the year Jack McLaughlin also had a fine run to finish in fifth but showed great promise for the coming year.

The girls under thirteen were also unfortunate to narrowly miss out on team medals with Niamh Brady in 4th, Lucy Smith in 14th and Judith Bell in 17th who are all eligible to run under twelve. Likewise the two boys in the under thirteen race also had to move up an age but both ran very bravely and worked well together with Dean Murtagh finishing in 8th position and Cian Loy in 9th.

Eoghan Smith made his cross country debut when he put his toe on the start line of the boys under 15 race and didnt look out of place with a fifth place finish. The last race of the day was a fit for life 2.5k and it was St Peters veteran campaigner Andrew Rogers who took an early lead which he kept right to the finish for victory.

On Friday night the club celecbrated the fantastic 2015 season with its annual awards night. In what was a very well attended event the clum remembered its humble begining with a number of the founder members in attendance. James McKeown and Willie Reilly both attended and enjoyed the celebration. The great Noel Carroll who started his glittering career with the St Peters club was also represented by his brother Patsy Carroll who spoke fondly of his brothers fantastic career. The club also donated a new cup on behalf of the carroll family for overall St Peters AC athleteof the year.

Of the numerous awards on the night the club recognised its four national Champions of 2015 Emily Rogers, Katie Murphy, Gabriel Bell and Sean Allen. The over all Athlete of the year was Katie Murphy while Katie also collected female thrower of the year, Martin McGrane was male thrower of the year. The jumping awards went to Emily Rogers and Gabriel Bell. Niamh Brady and Sean Allen won the cross country awards while Gabriel Bell and Katie Murphy won the track and field awards and youngsters Lucy Brennan and Katie Mulligan were also honored for their achievments.
