26 January 2016

The first competitive weekend of 2016 took place last weekend and the St Peters AC club baged a total of three national medals. The club Chairman Brendan Rogers led by example as he was the first to win a medal when he put in a brave performance as he competed in the National Masters Indoor Combined events in Athlone IT arena on Saturday. Brendan was competing in the over 50 category and held of the challange of some of his younger competitors in the keenly contested competition. Brendan who turned 56 last November rolled back the years with a time of 8.70 in the sixty metres, a throw of 7.88 in the shot putt, he then jumped 4.43 in the Long jump. When the point were totaled Brendan had 1423 which earned him a bronze medal some 70 points clear of fourth place.

Mark Rogers couldnt led his dad have all the glory and indeed this fine athlete followed the example set by his father and also finished the day standing on the podium however he managed to go one better with a silver place finish in the National Senior event. Mark Began with a time of 9.49 in the 60M hurdles, a long jump of 5.79m, a shot Putt of 10.48, he then jumped 1.85 M in the high jump and 165.62 in the 1000M for a total points score of 3182. This was a tight finish and Mark was just 24 points short of the gold medal.

Gabriel Bell was also competing in the under 16 category of the combined events however thing just didn’t go to plan for Gabriel on the day and Gabriel finished in 5th place in what was a very high standard competition. However Gabriel would be pleased with his Long Jump as his form in what would be his stongest diciplin seemed to return with a leap of 5.94 Metres.

On Sunday DKIT was the venue as Louth Athletics hosted the National juvenile B championships, the Juvenile inter county Relays along with the National Masters and Intermediate Cross country Championships. Rory McLoughlin who was due to run in the under 13 race got a late call up to the Louth Under twelve team and gratefully accepted the invitation. Rory ran the second leg for the County team in the 4 x 500M race. When Rory received the batton the team were in third place, he then ran a fantastic 500M and handed over the batton with his team in the lead. The Louth team finished in a second place behind a very strong Cavan Team. This was great for Rory and with his team mates collected his first National Medal. Niamh Brady also was part of the girls Louth under 12 relay team and like her team mates tried very hard unfortunately the team finished outside the medals. Earlier in the day the club had girls and boys in the under eleven races, Lucy Smith and Judith Bell both finished very strong in the girls race and the trio of Dean Murtagh, Ronan Deery and Cian Loy battled well through the large field in the boys under 11 race.

Next week attention turn s to the local scene as Blackrock AC host their annual cross country event and the club will have a large representation present. Before that the club will celebrate the 2015 season with our annual awards night which will take place in the St Joseph GAA club rooms.
